Palm trees
How to care for a palm tree: watering, pruning and fertilizing
A well cared-for palm tree ultimately needs fairly little attention once established. Here is the essential guide to watering, pruning and fertilizing.
Watering
- Abundant, regular watering during the first 2 to 3 months after planting
- After that, weekly watering is generally enough outside of heatwaves
- In summer in the south of the country, increase frequency to avoid water stress
Frond pruning
- Only cut fronds that are completely dry or yellowed
- Avoid pruning fronds that are still green, they feed the palm tree
- Use a disinfected tool to avoid spreading disease
Fertilizing
Applying fertilizer in spring and summer supports healthy growth, especially during the first two years after planting. Poor soil can noticeably slow the palm tree's development.
