How to lay rolled lawn: step-by-step guide
Laying rolled lawn gives you a dense lawn in one day, provided you follow a few key steps. Here is how to proceed from start to finish.
The equipment you need
- A rake and a spade to prepare the soil
- A lawn roller or, failing that, a wide board for tamping
- A hose or watering can
- A cutter to trim the edges
The laying steps
- Fully weed the area and remove stones, roots and debris
- Loosen the soil to a depth of 10 to 15 cm and level it carefully
- Add a little compost or potting soil if needed to enrich the surface
- Unroll the lawn slabs in a staggered pattern, edge to edge without overlapping
- Tamp each slab with a roller or board to ensure contact with the ground
- Water abundantly within 30 minutes of laying
Mistakes to avoid
The most common mistakes are poorly levelled soil (leaving dips), insufficient watering in the first days, or laying too late after receiving the lawn. Lay your lawn within 24 to 48 hours of delivery for optimal rooting.
